One
of our readers has asked what they can do to strengthen their doors
after reading about a recent burglary where the hinges were broken.
One easily fitted and useful option would be to fit hinge bolts.
These are steel rods which are inserted into the hinge side of the
door; when the door is closed they go into a hole in the door frame
which is fitted with a metal plate. This helps to spread the load
over a larger area if the door is subjected to force. They are particularly
useful for outward opening doors, as they prevent the door being
opened by removing the hinge pins. Hinge bolts are cheap and fairly
easy to fit, and should be available in most DIY stores.

Here is the latest crime briefing for you. It includes a number
of crime reports I was not able to send you last week, so don't
be too alarmed at the number.
You
will notice that there are several burglaries where the thief got
in through an open window. Obviously, with this exceptionally hot
weather, you will want as many windows open as possible, but please
take care when leaving the house, even for a short time, as the
average burglary is over in a matter of a few minutes. Again, at
night, please ensure that any accessible windows are secured if
at all possible. There are window locks on the market which enable
you to lock a window partially open, at least, although obviously
not fully open. Please ensure that any valuables, such as laptops
and cameras, are out of reach of all windows.
Also
take care when leaving your car unattended. It is all to easy to
forget that you have left the windows open when parking; I have
done it myself. There have been re more and more thefts of satellite
navigation systems; if you have one, remove both the unit and the
holder when leaving the car unattended, if possible, so that you
don't give a clue to the thief that there may be a system hidden
in the boot.
Regrettably,
there have been more distraction burglaries reported. A number of
the thefts in neighbouring boroughs have been by a man posing as
a water board official, dressed each time in a vertically striped
blue and white shirt. We have al;so had people posing as police
officers and council officials. If you are not absolutely sure who
you are letting in to your house, always ask for identifcation,
check it carefully, and if not completely certain, refuse them entry
and ask them to call back by appointment. You can then confirm their
identity and also arrange for a friend or relative to be there when
they return.

Here is the crime briefing for this week. We have not been able
to get full figures for the week, so those that are missing will
be added to the next bulletin.
The
attached notice from the police concerns distraction burglaries
in the borough.
It
looks as if the hot weather is going to continue for some time,
so be very careful when leaving the house empty. Every year, we
get an increase in the number of burglaries where the thief enters
through a window left open while the occupants are out. We also
get some where the burglar enters at night, so please be extra careful,
especially with ground floor or other accessible windows.

The Yellow Pages phone books will be delivered to the SW8, SW11,
SW12, SW16 and SW17 postcode areas in the 2 or 3 weeks from 14th
July. Inevitably, some will be left on doorsteps, and to reduce
the risk of burglaries, could you please ask neighbours to take
them in until the occupiers return.

Furzedown Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team
Tooting Police Station
The next Furzedown Safer Neighbourhood Team Ward Panel meeting will
take place on WEDNESDAY 19th JULY 2006 at 7.30pm at The Furzedown
Project, Moyser Road.
Now
that Furzedown Ward has its full complement of Officers, 1 PS, 2
PC's, and 3 PCSO's this will be the last open Furzedown SNT Meeting,
and during this meeting we will be looking for volunteers to become
part of a Ward Panel.
The
Ward Panel should be made up of local people whose role is to assess
the local concerns, identified through community engagement and
analysis, and establish priorities for policing in the Safer Neighbourhood
area. The panel gives direction and local advice to the Safer Neighbourhoods
team, although some priorities will require partners to take the
lead.
The
panel should be made up of local people who live and/or work in
the area or are involved in charitable work or business and have
a close connection with the area. These people could be identified
through consultation activities carried out on the ward i.e. public
meetings, ‘have a say events’ or questionnaires.
The
Ward Panel will meet bi monthly as with the past meetings, and we
require 10 - 12 people.
In
order to ensure that other Furzedown residents are also able to
meet with their SNT team, and discuss local concerns, we will be
replacing the 'open' ward meetings with Open Days and other public
meetings which will be held at various venues across the ward.
If
anyone would like to volunteer to become a ward panel member, please
let me know at the next Ward Meeting on the 19th.
Any
thoughts or concerns, please let me know

Wandsworth Council Trading Standards Section have been advised by
a resident of Graveswood Street that builders are cold calling in
the road asking home owners if they would like to have a free survey
of the exterior of their home. If the home owner is interested they
are asked to complete a form requesting a free survey.
BEWARE.
By signing a form and inviting a trader to call to provide a quote
for any work that may be required you will be losing your right
to cancel within seven days any work you later agree to.
REMEMBER.
Whenever you are approached by any person offering to carry out
repairs to your property
Think
before you agree to any repairs.
Always
ask yourself: would you have had these repairs even if a trader
had not called? If the answer is no, you need to think very carefully
about your decision:
·
Do I need it done?
· Can I afford it?
· Can I get a quote from someone else?
· Is it good value?
· Have I been given a written estimate or quote?
· Do I know the name and address of this person?
· Do I have a telephone number of the person?
· Do I have a right to cancel?
If
the services cost more than £35 and you did not invite the
trader to call then you generally have seven days to change your
mind and cancel the contract.
By
law the trader must give you a written notice detailing your rights
to cancel the contract. Failure to do this is a criminal offence.
If the trader refuses to leave when asked, call the police, at Tooting
Police Station 020 8247 8021.

There
have been a number of thefts of cycles this month from with houses
and blocks of flats. Please ensure that you lock your bike securely,
wherever you leave it.
Please
don't forget there is still a knife amnesty. There have been several
robberies involving the use of knives recently, so the more knives
that can be removed from circulation, the better. Most police stations
have a bin where you can drop the knife, with no questions asked

A couple of warnings:-
On
a least two occasions recently a man posing as a water board official
has tried to get into flats at Lockyer House, The Platt, SW15. Luckily
he was refused entry both times. It is believed he made off in a
white Bedford van with blue stickers on the sides and with a yellow
flashing light on the roof. If you have any information please pass
it to your local police, contact details in the briefing.
Another
worrying incident also happened in Putney, where two people, an
man and a woman, posed as police officers and tried to gain entry.
They were wearing dark trousers and white shirts and one had some
form of identification. Again, they were refused entry, and the
lady kept her door chain on. They were offering the victim a green
and white pot for the fridge, and tried to persuade the victim to
let them in. The pot in the fridge is a genuine scheme, supported
by this unit, where your contact details are kept in the fridge
in case of emergencies. They are available from doctor's surgeries
and similar places and some co-ordinators also have been given supplies
to distribute. However, there should be no need for anyone to enter.

I have had a warning from a couple of sources recently regarding
PDS Parcel Delivery Services. They apparently leave
a card, saying that there is a parcel for collection and asking
you to ring an 0906 number to make arrangements
to collect it. As I am sure you are all aware, 0906 numbers are
premium rate and will incur an excessive charge, reported to be
as high as £15 per minute. Before you phone, make sure you
are expecting a parcel, and if you are, perhaps check with the sender
which delivery service they use.
Another warning, regarding chalk marks left outside your house on
the wall or pavement. Many burglars use various symbols to point
out vulnerable premises to other burglars, so if you see something
strange, wash it off, and perhaps prevent another burglary.

A man recently called at a sheltered housing unit in the borough
claiming to be from the BBC, and doing a programme about water meters
and the hosepipe ban. He was unable to produce any form if identification
and left hurriedly when challenged by the staff. He was a white
male with an Irish accent, 5'8" tall, with blue eyes and short
dark hair, wearing a dark single breasted suit, a white shirt and
no tie.
www.immobilise.com
is a web site, supported by the police, the mobile phone industry
and Transport for London, where you can register items of property
that might get stolen while you are out and about. The service is
free, and covers such items as mobile phones, laptop computers,
bicycles, MP3 players and sattelite navigation systems. In the event
of an item being stolen, you can retrieve a full description from
the web site, and also pass the information on to the police stolen
property database. This can also help with insurance claims. Also
on the site you will find numbers and directions on how to contact
your mobile phone company, in order to block a stolen phone and
stop it from being used by the thief.
An
allied site, www.checkmend.org
allows access to the database via the internet or mobile phone,

By popular demand, the street crime figures will
be included in future briefings. This is obviously something that
many of you want to receive, judging by the number of messages I

many of you do actually read the briefings.
I
have included another attachment this week, concerning dumped
