Here is the latest crime briefing for your area. Please note that
it is not a full week, just the incidents up to 15th; thre remainder
will be sent with the next briefing.
Don't forget that burglars do not have a holiday before Christmas,
and are always on the lookout for nice new items to steal, so be
particularly vigilant over the period, especially if you are going
away. Don't leave items on display, and ensure that all your doors
and windows are securely locked when you are away from your home.
Please note that the dustmen in Wandsworth should not be soliciting
for tips, so beware of anyone posing as refuse collectors and asking
for money.

The Police at Wandsworth need your help in identifying the men shown
in the attached CCTV pictures who are wanted in connection with
a GBH on 12th September 2009 at approximately 4:00 am.
The
victim was travelling on the N87 Bus when a group, including the
suspects got on the bus. The suspects started to make fun of the
victim's appearance and then completely unprovoked, attacked and
punched him, fracturing his eye socket. The group got off and walked
away down Lavender Hill.
Can

There have been
a number of burglaries over the past few weeks where the burglar
has entered from the back of the house, after getting into the rear
garden. Could you please ensure that you lock up all your back doors
and windows with the same care you use at the front? Padlocking
back gates and ensuring that your fences and hedges are sound can
also go a long way in preventing access to the back garden.

30 November 2009: Witness Appeal
Wandsworth CID is appealing for information and witnesses following
an assault.
The male victim had attended a private party at The Blend Bar, Wandsworth,
High Street, SW18 on Friday 20th November 2009. An altercation occurred
inside the bar between the victim and an unknown male, however it
was believed this had been resolved.
The victim left the club at approximately 3am on Saturday and again
a disagreement occurred between him and the male. A fight started
and the victim was suddenly surrounded by 10 - 15 mainly black males.
He
was viciously attacked and stabbed 5 times on the street near to
the Blend Bar. He was knocked to the ground but was picked up by
friends who took him to a car parked nearby. A few minutes later
he realised he had been stabbed, and he was taken to St George’s
Hospital where he received an urgent life saving operation.
Whilst
the victim was at the hospital, on Saturday 21st November at approximately
4am, it is believed that 4 males, part of the group who attacked
him, turned up at St George’s. They were chased off by his
friends and left the scene at speed in a silver BMW 3 series with
partial index plate 54.
The
description of the suspect is a mixed race male, 18 years old, with
an afro haircut, wearing a blue jacket. There is no description
at present of any of the other suspects involved.

I understand that there has been at least one theft from a motor
vehicle where a strip of plastic was used to release the door lock
of a car after bending the door outwards. Many recent cars allow
you to double-lock the vehicle when leaving it, and I would advise
doing that everytime you leave it as it will make it much harder
for a thief to enter. Check your car handbook for details if you
are not sure whether your vehicle has this facility.
There have been a number of attempted burglaries this week around
the borough where the thief was prevented from entering by the proper
use of deadlocks. There is often a small amount of damage, but that
is better than having a full burglary, so again, double lock when
leaving.

There has been a reduction in the number of robberies recently,
with several wards having none reported during the week. On the
other hand, there have been quite a number of burglaries in flats,
often in converted houses. If a burglar can get past the communal
front door, people are often complacent about the security of their
flat door and the burglar then has an easy time of it. Communal
doors are often fitted with poor quality locks and are frequently
left insecure. If you live in a building like this, consider how
you might get in if you left your keys behind. If you could break
a small piece of glass near the lock and reach through, or if a
small kick would open it, you are not safe.
Consider
fitting good quality locks, to British Standard 8621 ( to enable
someone to get out in an emergency without the use of a key) and
protect the glass with grilles or replace it with laminated glass.
Treat you own flat door as an outer door and lock it accordingly.
Fit it with a mortice lock, in this case to BS 3621, or a suitable
rimlock; a good locksmith will be able to advise you on particular
models.

Kerb crawling operation
Responding to local residents concerns Bedford Safer Neighbourhoods
Team from Wandsworth in partnership with the Metropolitan Police
Clubs and Vice Unit (CO14), Lambeth’s St. Leonards Safer Neighbourhoods
Team and Wandsworth Council’s Parks Police held a four night
Operation targeting Kerb Crawlers in Bedford Hill and Garrards Road
between 12th - 15th October 2009.
Operation
Placepot was set up to target Kerb-crawlers in the vicinity of Tooting
Bec Common on the border of Wandsworth and Lambeth due to the level
of nuisance and anti-social behaviour generated by street prostitution
and kerb-crawling, which in turn can create an intimidating atmosphere
for local residents.
Over
the course of four nights undercover, plain clothed and uniformed
police officers were used in order to arrest twenty two men who
were subsequently charged under Section 1 of the Sexual Offences
Act 1985. They will all appear at South Western Magistrates Court
in November.
Sgt
Eric Ostrowski of Bedford SNT said ‘On speaking to local residents
the problem has got a lot better over the years, however kerb-crawling
still causes annoyance, nuisance and intimidation to people in the
neighbourhood. People who use prostitutes will often mistakenly
focus their attention on other women passing by. The impact is that
an area becomes undesirable, unpleasant and unsafe. As well as recently
obtaining a 5- year ASBO for one prolific street prostitute banning
her from the area and also offering vulnerable women a way out from
prostitution Bedford SNT together with their partners also wished
to target the men who fuel the demand for prostitutes.
Kerb-crawlers
have a choice and they should know that by choosing to use street
prostitutes they are also fuelling the drug economy and associated
anti-social behaviour. I hope that by running this operation it
will show the community that Bedford SNT, their colleagues at St.
Leonards SNT in Lambeth and the Parks Police take this problem very
seriously and will continue to run similar Operations in the near
future'.

Each
week, some of the reported burglaries are the result of entries
through unlocked doors or windows. Whenever you leave the house,
please ensure that both doors and windows are securely locked. Key-operated
window locks are available to fit most windows that do not have
integral locks, and front and rear doors should be fitted with appropriate
mortice or cylinder locks conforming to British Standard.
Investigation Success:
On the 14th April 2009 three men travelled from North London intent
on stealing a safe from an address in Balham where one of them had
been working briefly as a labourer.
They
arrived at the address at about eight thirty in the evening and
knocked on the door. Inside the address was the owner of the house,
his wife and their two young children together with two friends
of the parents.
The
occupants opened the door and the three men ran in, two of them
wearing balaclavas. One held a member of the family at gunpoint
demanding that he open a safe in the premises. When he and his wife
were unable to open the safe, the men threatened to shoot them and
their children who were being held by members of the gang in another
room. To protect this family the occupier managed to lift the safe
with the suspects to the front door.
The
suspects also robbed the occupants at gun point of their cash and
jewellery and the keys to their car outside. They attempted to put
the safe into the back of the car but were unable so left it on
the pavement and escaped in the victim’s car which they abandoned
in Tooting.
DS
Rory Wilkinson said ‘DNA evidence was gained which identified
two suspects. A third suspect was subsequently identified through
further research. All three suspects were arrested after a series
of armed operations and further evidence was found. This investigation
persuaded all three to plead guilty at court and they are now awaiting
sentencing on the 2nd November.’
‘The victims of this crime are very pleased that the suspects
have been caught and have admitted their guilt. Many people were
involved in the investigation but special mention should be given
to TDC Karen Mathews who worked tirelessly throughout the investigation
and also to the victims for their calmness and presence of mind
during the incident and their subsequent enthusiasm in helping to
catch those responsible. A great result for all those involved.’
There
are three appeals from the police.
1. Witness Appeal:
On
Friday the 9th of October 2009 sometime after 22:00 hours, the victim
left A BAR TOO FAR on Mitcham Road SW17 and was making his way home.
He turned right onto Tooting High Street and then left onto Selkirk
Road. As he was walking along Selkirk Road near to the junction
of Fishponds Road, he was attacked from behind by a group of 6 -
8 suspects.
The
victim was forced to the pavement where he was set upon by the group.
Only four of the suspects attacked him, whilst the others watched
him being assaulted.
He was repeatedly punched and kicked in the face and had his wallet
stolen. The suspects demanded he tell them his PIN number or he
would die. The group of suspects ran off, leaving the victim with
three fractures to his jaw and multiple bruising to the face.
The suspects have been described as a group of approximately 6-8
black males aged 16-17 years old.

£10,000 Reward for information:
On
Sunday 1st February 2009 at approximately 11:30pm, the driver of
a no. 37 bus pulled up to the bus stop in Fairfield Street, Wandsworth,
SW18. Weather conditions were poor due to heavy snow. As the driver
stood in the doorway of his bus, clearing snow from a wing mirror,
he was struck by a snowball. The driver locked his cab then got
off the bus to remonstrate with whoever threw the snowball. Someone
pulled his jacket over his head and he was set upon. During the
struggle, the driver was struck in the face. He managed to return
to his bus, bleeding heavily and a bystander called police.
The
victim has suffered life-changing injuries and has been left blind
in one eye as a result of this unprovoked assault. Two males have
been arrested in connection with this assault and are on police
bail. Police are appealing for information. The bus company, London
Central, together with the independent charity Crime

Assault Witness Appeal:
Police
are appealing for witnesses and information following an assault
in Putney.
On
Saturday 19 September 2009 between 3am and 3:30am two males were
assaulted on Putney High Street SW15 and Chelverton Road SW15. The
victims had gone to B@1 on Putney High Street. They were on their
way home and walked to the bus stop area on Putney High Street,
then sat down on a bench next to a group of girls. There were males
nearby.
One
of the males who appeared to be with the girls asked them why they
had sat down next to them. A disagreement followed with one of the
males who then punched the first victim in the face. This caused
him to fall over and hit his head on a metal railing. The group
of approx. 5 males and 3 females started to run off.
The second victim chased the group up one of the side roads, possibly
Felsham Road or Lacy Road, whilst calling the ambulance and the
police. The last thing he remembers was chasing the male who had
assaulted his friend and two females.
They were running down Chelverton Road back towards Putney High
Street when victim 2 was then attacked by the male on Chelverton
Road.
The suspect is described as white with short hair wearing a white
shirt. The females are described as white (one was wearing a short
dark dress/skirt). Another male member of the group was described
as in his mid-late 20’s, black, with short hair, greyish top
and jeans. Both victims’ had broken jaws and injuries to head.

Cannabis Factory
On Monday 28th September 2009 police were called to West Hill SW18
by a member of the public after a cannabis factory was discovered
at the location.
Officers attended and entered the address where they discovered
approximately 600 - 700 cannabis plants at various stages of growth,
across 5 rooms along with a large amount of hydroponic equipment.
The property was searched for suspects then quickly secured to preserve
all possible forensic opportunities. Officers liaised with the electricity
company to ensure the property was made safe. DI Simon Rowe said
‘This is a good result which came from a tip off from a member
of the public. These cannabis factories are often linked to organised
crime. They put both police officers and the public at risk as the
electricity supply is often unsafe and potentially lethal.’
Firearms
Wandsworth Borough has been suffering from an increase in the criminal
use of firearms. There have been incidents in the Wandsworth, Roehampton
and Battersea areas. Intelligence shows that criminals are using
youths both male and female to store and transport firearms. In
Wandsworth Borough a 15 year old youth was recently arrested and
charged with storing ammunition at his home address to be used by
older criminals.
Det.
Superintendent William Lyle said ‘I would like to make an
appeal to parents. Please make sure your child is not being used
in this way. Those who store weapons for others are committing a
crime, as well as helping others to commit theirs. If you have any
concerns or need advice please call Wandsworth Police on

Officers
and London Ambulance Service attended and discovered a 15-year-old

Appeals:
Police were called just before 17:25hrs on Wednesday, 9 September,
to reports of shots fired in Wye Street, SW11.
Police and an ambulance attended and a 36-year-old man was taken
to a south London hospital suffering injuries, believed to be stab
wounds. His condition is serious, but not life threatening.
At
this early stage, we believe shots were fired at this location,
although we are not aware of anybody suffering gunshot injuries.
At
around 18:40hrs, officers found a van in Lavender Hill near Mossbury
Road that appeared to have gunshot damage, and a 24-year-man was
found nearby suffering a gunshot wound to his leg. This man was
taken to an east London hospital where his condition is serious,
but not life threatening.
Operation
Trident detectives are carrying out inquiries into the circumstances
of the incidents and five youths have been arrested.
Police are appealing for witnesses and information following
an assault in Tooting.
Police were called at just before 22:15hrs on Tuesday 8 September
to reports of a man assaulted in Gatton Road, Tooting.
Officers
attended and treated the 30-year-old victim before he was taken
by London Ambulance Service to a local hospital where he was treated
for head injuries and later discharged.
The
victim, who is Asian, had just left the Mosque on Gatton Road when
he was approached by a group of youths, one of whom assaulted him
with a weapon. The suspect is believed to be black and aged in his
teens.
Detectives
from Wandsworth Police are carrying out enquiries into the circumstances
of the incident.

Recently
a young man, white, 20 years old, about 5 feet 9 inches high and
with cropped brown hair, called at an address in Battersea claiming
that he was calling for previously agreed sponsorship money for
a 38 mile cycle ride. He showed the potential victim a sponsorship
form, which did not have the relevant name on it, and he was not
given any money. Although this might have been a genuine mistake,
that is unlikely. If a similar thing happens to you, note a description
and direction for the person and let the police know straight away.

lone, elderly females, and the attacks were at similar times and
close to each other.
On
Wednesday the 19th of August 2009 at about 1:10pm, the elderly victim
was walking along Thrale Road onto Fayland Avenue. As she got to
the junction of Aldrington Road, she was pushed to the ground from
behind and a black male, aged 30-31, grabbed her handbag and ran
off. The victim was injured and was taken to hospital.
On
Saturday the 22nd of August 2009 at approximately 1:50 pm, another
victim was walking across Tooting Bec Common when she was attacked
while on the grass area between North Drive and Tooting Bec Road.
She was approached from behind by a black male, aged 30-31, who
stole her handbag and then got into a car and drove off along Tooting
Bec Road.
Both of these robberies occurred in daylight and are believed to
have been committed by the same suspect.

Pickpocket
Appeal
On Monday 03 August 2009 at approximately 11:05 am, the victim withdrew
a large amount of cash from the Barclays ATM on Upper Tooting Road
SW17. She made her way to the bus stop nearby. She was approached
by two eastern European females who distracted her whilst one of
them took her money and two passports from her handbag.
Also
on the same day at approximately 12:30 pm, another victim withdrew
a large amount of cash from the Lloyds ATM on Mitcham Road SW17.
She then made her way to Longley Road, which runs off Mitcham Road,
where she was approached by two eastern European females who asked
her for directions, whilst one of them took the cash from her handbag.
Both
pickpocket incidents are believed to be linked and are believed
to be the same suspects. Both occurred within walking distance and
just over an hour of each other. The targeted victims are lone,
elderly females who have withdrawn large amounts of cash from ATM's.
The suspects use distraction methods in order to dip into the victims
bags.
Suspects
are described as: Two eastern European females, 18-25 years, 5ft
8in, wearing black / white head scarves, one of which had a flower
design.

There
are still too many distraction burglaries occurring within the borough.
If you have any neighbours that you consider might be vulnerable
to this type of offence, could you please warn them. Among the ploys
used recently are men posing as builders carrying work out next
door, who claim to have caused damage to the victim's fence and
lure them away from the house to look at it, allowing an accomplice
to enter the house. Another posed as a window cleaner, and others
have pretended to be gas, water or electricity workers. Descriptions
vary, and they can be of any age or either gender.

Quite
a lot of bicycles have been stolen across the borough recently,
possibly encouraged by the coverage of the Tour de France. Many
of them are from apparently secure locations, such as underground
car parks and garden sheds. If you have a bicycle, please ensure
that it is securely locked to an immovable object, and that the
lock you use is of a decent quality. Spend as much as you a can
afford on the lock and make sure that it goes through both the frame
and the front wheel, as well as around the object you are chaining
it to. Make a record of the description and frame number and consider
getting it property-marked - contact your local SNT for this. Please
be aware that bikes chained to railings in a public place,m such
as near railway stations, are liable to be removed for public safety
reasons. There are many cycle racks available where your bike can
be safely secured. Transport for London have a new cycling site
at ;- http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/11598.aspx
with lots of useful advice, and the Wandsworth Cycling Campaign
also has plenty of good advice at :- http://www.wandsworthcyclists.org.uk/

We
are apparently going to get some rain over the next few days, but
the warm weather should be returning soon. Please be careful about
leaving windows open at night, as night time burglaries are more
frequent at this time of year, even when the occupiers are at home.
If you have sash windows, they can be fitted with sash stop window
locks, which enable you to leave the window partially open in reasonable
safety while you are at home. Be more careful with casement windows,
but they can be fitted with locks to the casement stays, and that
should give you plenty of warning if they are interfered with. Alternatively,
consider fitting a bar to the outside, to limit the distance they
can be opened.
Burglars are still getting in through front doors, by hooking the
door keys through the letterbox or cat flap. Sometimes they just
steal your car from outside and do not bother entering the house.
This can be prevented by making sure that the keys are out of sight
and out of reach, and by fitting an internal deflector plate to
the letterbox. These are cheap and simple to fit, and should be
available from most locksmiths.

Crime
Prevention Advice
The Borough has been suffering from a spate of burglaries. These
have often been as a result of inadequate locks and windows being
left open on the hot
summer days. Please keep all windows closed when you are out, review
your locks and keep car keys and handbags out of view and away from
windows and doors.
A lot of burglaries are committed on the spur of the moment, as
a burglar may see an open window or other easy point of entry and
take their chance.
Basic tips:
-
When you go out, always lock the door and close the windows -
even if you are just going out for a short time.
- Window
locks, especially on older windows, will help stop people getting
in.
-
Don't leave spare keys outside, or in a garage or shed, and put
car keys or garage keys out of sight in the house.
-
Fitting a 'spy hole' allows you to see who is at the door. Having
a door chain means you can open the door a little way to talk
to them.
Now
it’s summer and the days are warmer, be aware of windows left
open, even if you are only in the garden .
Sainsbury Arson
Police are appealing for witnesses following an arson at Sainsbury's,
Tooting High Street, which occurred at about 17.30 on Wednesday
10th June 2009.
Stock
was set alight causing danger to shoppers and damage to store property.
Two males were seen by the toilet roll aisle. One was white, aged
in his late 20s, slim with fair hair, wearing a grey sweatshirt
and combat trousers. The other was of Middle Eastern appearance,
aged in his 30s, wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.
Did you see these males?
