Tooting & Balham Sector Briefing (Crime Report) Week Ending
22nd Feb:
BURGLARY
One case to bring to your attention this week:
On Thursday 14th March 2002, at about 7.30pm, the front door of
premises at Clapham Mansions, Nightingale Lane, were forced using
an implement. Fortunately, the intruder was disturbed by occupier,
and made good his escape through the kitchen window.
STREET
CRIME
Unfortunately the past week has not been a good one in terms of
street crime. Five of the reported cases are worthy of attention:
1) On Monday 11th March 2002, at 12.10pm, a lone white male,
described as being 6 feet tall, 40 years of age, with grey hair,
with a stubble growth on his chin, entered a betting shop in Balham
Hill. He was wearing a green three-quarter length jacket and sunglasses,
and once inside produced a blue and white carrier bag, intimating
that it contained a shot gun. After threatening the staff threats,
he left with a quantity of cash.
2) The same day, at 2.30pm, a young man was the victim of
a particularly nasty robbery on Tooting Bec Common, near Byrne Road.
Two suspects approached their victim, and threatened him with a
small knife. As a consequence he handed over his wallet and money.
Not content with this his assailants punched him several times to
force him to reveal the PIN number of his credit card. They then
made off in the general direction of Tooting.
It was only then that the victim realised he had been stabbed in
the chest, thankfully he has received treatment and is recovering
from his ordeal.
One of those responsible was described as a black skinned man, 20
years of age, 5feet 9inches tall, and of medium build, dressed in
a black hooded jumper and blue cap. His accomplice, also black,
was slightly built, of similar age and height, with a goatee beard
an Afro hair style. He was wearing a grey hooded jumper.
3) The same pair of thieves could also be responsible for
a robbery later at 6pm, in a pizza restaurant in Tooting High Street,
as well as three similar offences which have happened recently at
the same location. On each occasion cash was stolen.
In this latest incident a large knife was used to threaten the staff.
Descriptions given were by witnesses were of a black male, 5feet
10inchestall, wearing a blue jacket and black jeans. The second
male was also black, and his height given as 5feet 7inches tall,
with a goatee beard, dressed in a white sleeved black jacket, and
black trousers.
4) On Wednesday 13th March, at 8.10pm, a lady was walking
alone along Ethelbert Road, when she was approached from behind,
by an athletically built black youth. He is described as being about
18 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and at the time he was wearing
a dark hooded top The young man yanked her bag from her grasp and
it is believed the he left the scene in a vehicle, possibly a Ford
Mondeo, with an index similar to J 718 LOY. Some of the victims'
property was found near Crystal Palace, about one and a half hours
after the incident.
Do you know anyone who matches the description of this man, who
drives or uses a vehicle which could match this description? If
you do please contact PS Victoria Machin, details of whom are given
at the end of this bulletin.
5) Finally in this section, on Thursday 14th March 2002,
at about 3am, the victim was walking under the railway tunnel in
Bedford Hill, when he was approached by a black male, 25 years,
5'8", dark hooded jumper, with a front pouch pocket and dark
jeans. He was threatened with a long thin knife, and made to hand
over property.
He was then frog marched at knife point to Barclays Bank in Balham
Station Road, made to withdraw cash from the automatic telling machine
and hand it to the assailant. Having been given the cash, the robber
then ran off.
ALWAYS remember: No material possession is worth risking life
OR serious injury over. They can be replaced - you can't.
