STREET
CRIME - Disabled person attacked on a bus.
On Wednesday 18th July 2001, at 1pm, a disabled lady was getting
on a number 355 bus at a bus stop in Upper Tooting Road near
Tooting Broadway Station, when she was attacked, verbally abused
and pushed to the floor by a black male, aged about 30 years, 5'10"
tall, with a thin face and wearing a black woollen hat. A second
black suspect, aged about 30 years, 5'10" tall, with a black
scruffy beard then tried to wrest the lady's handbag from her. Not
unnaturally she tried to keep hold of her property, at which point
this man
jabbed her in the foot with the point of an umbrella he was carrying.
Both suspects then fled empty handed.
The most disturbing thing about the whole incident is that although
a number of people were in the close proximity, no one came forward
to help the lady.
Male victim robbed by gang of three.
On Thursday 19th July 2001, at 1-05am, at Hoyle Road, SW17
near the junction with Tooting High Street, a group of three men,
including one who was later arrested, dragged victim into Hoyle
Road, where he was assaulted and personal property stolen. The suspects
are described as an Afro-Caribbean man aged about 21, 5'10"
tall, wearing a black baseball cap and black jacket, accompanied

Lock It Or Loose It:
Now
that Summer is with us more and more of us will be out and about
on our bicycles. A few simple precautions can ensure that we can
still ride home after popping into the shop for a nice cold drink
or similar situation.
Bicycles are frequently stolen by the thief because of the ease
with which they can be sold. Make sure that you lock a cycle whenever
you leave it, even if you are just leaving it unattended briefly.
Have the frame marked with your postcode, your local crime prevention
officer may be able to arrange this (or ask your street's Neighbourhood
Watch Co-Ordinator), and keep a record of the frame number.
Lock your cycle to a static object such as a lamppost or roadsign
whenever you leave it, preferably using a loop type purpose built
cycle lock. These are more secure than a simple chain lock and usually
have the advantage of being designed to clip onto the cycle frame
when not in use.

STREET
CRIME
SIX GIRLS STEAL MOBILE PHONE. Tuesday 17th July 2001, at 11pm,
opposite the Gala Bingo Hall, Mitcham Road, SW17 a man was
standing at bus stop using his mobile telephone, when he was surrounded
by six black girls, aged between 13 and 15, who wrenched the phone
from his grasp. On of the suspects was wearing tight 'army' green
trousers and a black top.
LONE
WOMEN ROBBED ENTERING HOME On Thursday 12th July 2001 at 11pm,
a lone female was walking to her home in St James Drive Tooting
SW17 from Wandsworth Common Railway Station. She was just climbing
the steps to enter her house when she became aware that someone
was running behind her. As she turned around she was punched in
the face and her bag was stolen. The assailant is described as being
dark skinned, in his early 20's and was wearing a green T-shirt.
This is not the first case of this type to involve a female walking
home alone from this station late at night....
Just after midnight on Tuesday 10th July 2001 in FERNLEA ROAD, SW12
there was a similar attack. In this case the lone female victim
was pushed to the ground and dragged along the pavement, until she
gave up her bag. The suspect for this crime is a black male, wearing
a grey hooded sweatshirt and grey tracksuit.
The same day at 10-15pm in STREATHBOURNE RD SW17 a lady was
walking home with a friend had her bag violently pulled from her
neck and shoulders by a black male aged about 22 years, 5'10"
tall, wearing a waist length jacket and jeans. He then ran to a
red Fiat Punto car, registration number M117 VSL, being driven by
a white male of similar age and both drove off. The vehicle has
been reported to the police as having been stolen.
A similar incident happened in GASSIOT ROAD, SW17 late in
the evening of Sunday 15th July 2001. Once again the victim had
just reached home after walking from Tooting Underground Station.
As she was putting her key in the front door she was approached.
The attacker grabbed her bag from her shoulder, a struggle ensued
and she was pushed to the ground where she received injuries. He
grabbed her bag and made off along Franciscan Road. In this
most recent case the suspect was described as being a black male,
6'2" tall, of slim build, wearing a green T-shirt with a white
logo.
As a female walking alone, especially late at night, it is always
advisable to carry a personal alarm. Free advice how to obtain a
personal alarm and advice on personal safety can be obtained from
the Crime Prevention Centre, 17 Arndale Walk, Wandsworth Shopping
Centre, London SW18 4BX. (Telephone 020 8871 0803).
BEWARE Bag snatchers are currently operating at bus stops near
BALHAM BR STATION. The main suspect for these offences is a
black male, aged about 25 years, wearing light coloured trousers
and a dark T-shirt.
On Sunday 8th July 2001, at about 3-30pm a pickpocket was at work
in the vicinity of TOOTING LIBRARY, Mitcham Road SW17. The
description of the thief is given as a white male, aged about 22
years, 6Õ00Ó tall, dressed in a navy anorak and wearing a beige
baseball cap.
On Tuesday 10th July 2001, at 10-15pm, a white male aged about 18
years, dressed in a black 'Nike' anorak and dark trousers attempted
to steal a mobile phone in HEARNVILLE ROAD, SW12.
This type of crime appears to be on the increase in the vicinity
of railway stations, particularly those served by the underground.
It is essential that mobile phone users note the unique identity,
(the IMEI number), of their mobile phone. Having this easily
to hand when reporting its loss or theft often means the service
provider can immobilise the instrument, thereby saving the owner
vast costs in illicit telephone calls. The IMEI number can easily
be found by switching the phone on and entering *#06#.
Finally pickpockets are operating in the vicinity of TOOTING
BEC UNDERGROUND STATION. On Tuesday 17th July 2001, at 11-30pm
a black male aged 19 years, 5'9" tall, wearing a black sweater
and cap is believed to have been responsible for a crime in this
area.

ROAD and stole property. In one instance the crime took place
between 8-30am and 11-45pm in the other between 2-30pm and 6-15pm.
In one instance the ground floor window had been left insecure.
Please check that all windows and external doors are secured

Cycle Thefts in the City:
In the
City of London since January, there have been over 100 thefts of
pedal cycles. These bikes are high value approx, £400 to £500. A
new method of theft has recently become apparent, this involves
the thief or thieves riding a cycle of low value into a company's
underground car park then merely stepping off the cheap one and
taking away an expensive machine. This happens because owners of
the expensive bikes feel the security measures within the building
will act as a sufficient deterrent, and fail to take anti-theft
measures.
Could you please inform your staff warning them of this new development,
and ensure they take adequate precautions. If possible notices should
be posted in cycle parking areas warning against theft.
For further information please contact Inspector Anthony Cairney,
Community Safety Branch, City of London Police. (Tel 020 7601 2222).

ADVICE FOR GOING ON HOLIDAY:
A timely
reminder once more to all of you who are going away on your holidays....
Knowing your house is secure and being looked after does give you
peace of mind while away. It then only remains to ensure that the
added protection of a regular visit from a friend or neighbour will
ensure mail is pushed through the letter box, that nothing is left
on the doorstep, lighting on time switches is working and that the
front of your home is tidy to the casual observer. (PS Your neighbour
could also put a bin bag outside your home on collection days to
make it look as though your home is occupied. Ed.)
A car parked on the driveway adds to the illusion that someone is
at home. Finally, never arrange to be collected from your home address,
unless by a friend, for the start of your holidays. Use a nearby
location as a pick up point and never leave your return address
in open view on your suitcases. It is better to be home again from
your holiday before anyone realises you have gone (except for your
key holder(s) of course).

Warning About Petrol Money Scam:
Your
attention is called to a white male, aged about 45/46 years, very
stocky build, fair/brownish hair, dressed in a light brown suit
with an open necked shirt. This man approaches people and says
his car has run out of petrol. The man carries a large bunch
of keys and a mobile phone and points out a vehicle to the victim
saying it is 'his'. He then asks if they can let him have some
money, which he says he will post through the letter box when
he returns to collect his car. Of course he never returns. This
'scam' was last reported to have happened at 7-30pm, on Monday 4th
June 2001 in Fullerton Road, London SW18. If anyone approaches

Warning About New Robbery Scam:
A female,
whilst in a car park in the borough, was approached by two males
asking what kind of perfume she was wearing. They then asked her
if she would care to sample some perfume they were willing to sell
her at a cheap price. Fortunately the female had been pre-warned
that this scam was doing the rounds, and she declined. It would
seem that the scent (which is probably a noxious substance), causes
the victim to pass out, therefore allowing the assailants to rob
their victim(s), and possibly something more serious.

Crime Prevention Advice from The Police:
Mobile
phones: There has been an increase in the number of thefts of
mobile phones in the vicinity of Tube/BR stations, particularly
during the evening. Thieves may be watching you, so please don't
become another victim by flaunting your mobile. If it is stolen,
your service provider can block your phone permanently using your
unique IMEI (serial) number; to display yours, dial *#06#
record the number and keep it in a safe place.
Burglars can be delayed long enough to deter them; they may
give up or someone may see or hear them. If you were to be locked
out of your house, how would you get in? Assuming you haven't left
a spare set of keys with a neighbour, can think of an easy way to
do this? Bear in mind that if you how this can be done, it won't
take a thief long to figure how they can do it. Whenever leaving
your home, even for a short period, always lock all external
doors and windows, and set your burglar alarm (if you have one).
If you are going away for a longer time, use a timer or sensor
to control your lighting so that your home look occupied. Tune
your radio to a station where there is a predominantly 'talk'
type programmes and leave it switched on whilst you are away. This
creates the impression that someone could be in the house but doesn't
want to answer the door.
Yale locks are easily forced or slipped and old-fashioned
locks of this type should be replaced with a rim lock. These
should ALWAYS be supplemented by a mortise deadlock (to British
Standard 3621). Shatterproof film is available if you do
not have double-glazing. Avoid leaving keys in door locks or anywhere
else easily accessible, because burglars secure the front door (to
stop you getting in) and then set up an escape route. Master
bedrooms are usually ransacked first, as jewellery is likely
to be kept there. Record the serial numbers of all items
and mark them with your house number and postcode.
There is much less benefit in reviewing your security arrangements
after your valuables have been stolen, The time to prevent the crime
from happening is NOW.
BAGS: When in the street or a public place, bags should always
be carried with the flap next to your body and the zip to the front.
You are most vulnerable to pick pockets when boarding public
transport and in busy shops. From time to time thieves
target shoe shops; take all bags with you when you walk to
the mirror. In pubs and restaurants, place bags away from
others passing by and secure the straps under the leg of your chair
or table. Some premises such as pubs or restaurants may have Chelsea
Clips under the bar or tables. Rucksacks can be especially
vulnerable especially when being carried on your back. Always remember
to conceal valuables at the bottom of it.
FIGHTING BACK: DON'T - but do think self-preservation. Consider
a personal alarm and prevent a situation arising by returning
to a busy street.
REMEMBER: thieves take every opportunity to steal, so never
leave anything unattended.
