Here is this week's crime briefing for your area.

If anyone has been unable to find the booklet for business that I mentioned last week, it has been moved to www.londonprepared.gov.uk/business/london_first.pdf

If you ever wondered about motoring legislation or what to do about fly-tipping, speed cameras or firearms, have a look at the PLND site at www.askthe.police.uk/Content/g4.htm. This has been set up by the Association of Chief Police Officers to provide answers to all sorts of questions relating to the law and policing.

Message from Steve Selby,
Wandsworth Council Community Safety Division:

Here is the latest crime briefing for your sector. The number of robberies may appear larger than normal, but this is because I was not able to send complete figures last week, and have included them with this week's.

London bombs
The police are still anxious to receive any photos or video footage of last week's bombings in London, whether taken by mobile phone or otherwise, to help them piece together exactly what happened. If you have anything you feel might be of help, please send them to images@met.police.uk or to 07734 282 288

Anti-Terrorist Hotline
Call the Anti-Terrorist Hotline in confidence on 0800 789 321 if you have any information that could help beat terrorism

ICE - In Case of Emergency
There are frequently problems after incidents like last week's, where the emergency services have had trouble in identifying victims who do not have any identification on them. This causes delays in contacting relatives and possibly in administering the correct hospital treatment. A scheme has been devised by a paramedic from East Anglia to help overcome this. Simply put an entry in your mobile phone labelled ICE , for In Case of Emergency. Follow this with the name and phone number of the person you want contacted in an emergency, such as a husband, wife or close friend. It takes only a few moments, and could save a lot of distress if the worst should happen. By the way, apparently there is an email circulating that suggests that ICE is some form of virus or will lead to increased phone charges. This is NOT TRUE - it is simply an entry in your phone book.

Yellow Pages
Yellow Pages are delivering in your area over the next two or three weeks. If you see any copies left on your neighbours' doorsteps, could you please take them in to give to them later, so that burglars are not given an indication that the house is empty.

Message from Steve Selby,
Wandsworth Council Community Safety Division:

You may not know yet, but the police are in the process of reorganising the way the borough is policed. Safer Neighbourhood Teams have been set up in some areas, with others to follow later. These units are groups of dedicated officers, both police officers and community support officers, assigned to a ward. The idea is that they will be more or less permanent fixtures and should not normally be taken off the ward for duties elsewhere. A list of the new teams, together with photos of the officers and their contact details, can be found at http://www.met.police.uk/wandsworth/saferneighbourhoods.htm

Message from Steve Selby,
Wandsworth Council Community Safety Division:

A new scam has been spotted in Richmond. A well dressed man, aged around 60, said that he has trouble with his car, and needed some money to enable him to get home to Teignmouth, Devon. He produced a business card (with a false name and address) to back up his claim. The man is well known to Devon & Cornawall police, and apparently has been using this method for years to swindle people out of their cash.

Message from Steve Selby,
Wandsworth Council Community Safety Division:

An elderly lady in Putney recently managed to avoid becomng a victim. A woman called at her door, saying that she had just moved into the flat next door (which has a "For Let" sign) and introducing herself as Deborah. She told the lady that she was going to collect her daughter and needed £6.50 to top up her electric key, so that she could cook her daughters tea, but was told that she had no money and did not let her in.

She was described as in her early twenties, slim build, mixed race, 5ft 2ins , with her hair pulled back. She was wearing a pale blue/light grey tracksuit, had sunglasses on the top of her head and carried a shoulder bag. She was very fidgety and had a nervous laugh. On this occasion nothing was stolen, but only due to the vigilance of the elderly lady, who later reported the matter.

Message from Steve Selby,
Wandsworth Council Community Safety Division:

This has been received from Trading Standards, for your information.

Information has been received that traders are cold-calling in the Southfields area, in paricular around Victoria Drive, SW19 offering to supply and fit carpets. They claim that the carpets are left over from another job they have been doing in the area. The men involved are thought to be in their early to mid 30s, have London accents and drive a white van. One resident who agreed to the deal was driven by them to withdraw several hundred pounds in cash at a local bank. However when they returned to deliver the carpets only 3 rolls instead of 5 were left, there was no underlay, and they disappeared without fitting it. The carpets are thought to be poor quality. Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators are requested to advise their residents of these activities and to ask that any details of these or any similar instances are reported to Trading Standards. Any information received will be dealt with in confidence.
