Aladdin's Cave
Following the success of the last Aladdin's Cave day in September,
2007, where eleven burglary victims were reunited with some of their
lost property, another was held in early February. 350 people turned
up and not only had the chance to reclaim stolen goods but also
had the opportunity to get some excellent crime prevention advice.
Dozens
of items of suspected stolen property were put on display as part
of a joint Council and Police campaign against burglary in Wandsworth.
All of the items, which included a range of jewellery, watches,
medals, computers, flat screen televisions, bicycles, mobile phones
and game consoles, had been found in the possession of suspected
burglars during police investigations.
As
part of the event officers from the Police and Council were on hand
to give advice on such things as ID fraud prevention, property marking
and avoiding doorstep crime.
Another
Aladdin's Cave day is scheduled for 20th September at Room
122 in Wandsworth Town Hall.from 10am to 4pm.

Here
is the latest crime briefing for your area, together with the Met-wide
August SNT newsletter.
The Metropolitan Police are looking for any witnesses to an assault
that took place on a number 85 bus between 2am-3am on Friday 16
May 2008. The victim was an off-duty police officer who intervened
in a dispute, and as a result was punched in the face, requiring
medical intervention and dental work The suspect is described as
a white man, approximately 25-years-old and about 6ft tall. He was
wearing a pin striped suit and a bold pink shirt. He is also described
as being well spoken. He was heard to say he was trying to get to
Richmond where he lived. He actually got off at Kingston Hill, outside
the University. The number to ring with any information is 020 8541
1212 or Crimestoppers
on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous
Further details, including CCTV pictures of the assailant are available
at:- http://www.met.police.uk/news/man_sought_following_assault_police_oficer.htm
The
police would also like assistance with a incident at 6am on Monday
11 August 2008, in the vicinity of the Blue Ice Bar on Streatham
High Rd, SW16, when a 19 year old man was shot in the head. If you
can help with this, contact the Operation Trident incident room
on 020 8785 8580 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Further details are at:- http://www.met.police.uk/news/appeal_shooting_streatham_bar.htm
You may have heard recent talk about the police providing a crime-mapping
system at some point. They are testing such a system at:- http://www.met.police.uk/news/met_tests_crime_mapping_website.htm
and would like any feedback. They do not give details of individual
crimes, but show aggregated figures at a borough, ward and sub-ward
level, and you can compare figures and see trends.. Ward boundaries
are approximate only. ( Sub-wards are a statistical unit of about
1500 residents or 633 households, and the boundaries may appear
somewhat arbitrary.) Currently the figures are up to June of this
year.

Two
new scams:-
The first is in the form of an email from HM Revenue and Customs,
inviting you to apply for a tax refund, by clicking on a link in
the message. This is a hoax. (Whoever heard of the government giving
away money!)
The second happened to a lady in Tooting. A man called, offering
to clean her windows, trim her hedges and clean her gutters, together
with a few other tasks. It was no trouble climbing over her fence
to get to the back as he did it all the time. The lady paid him
£35 in advance, and, needless to say, the work was not done.
He was described as a white man in his early 40's, about 5' 10",
with short cropped light brown hair. He had a London accent and
was wearing glasses, a white top with light blue check and blue
jeans. He pointed out that he had a Millwall pin badge and that
his name was Mark King.

You
may have noticed the increased number of burglaries over the last
few weeks where the burglars have entered during the night, when
the occupiers are asleep. Normally, night-time burglaries are unusual,
but, because we have been getting some warmer weather recently,
the are more opportunities for burglar to find open windows at night.
Please, ensure that all your ground floor windows are properly secured
at night, and, where possible, those on upper floors as well. If
that is not possible, try putting items on the window sill which
might get knocked over, waking the occupiers, or are difficult for
a burglar to get round, such as cactuses.
Another type of burglary becoming more common is where car keys
are stolen during a night-time burglary, and the car is subsequently
stolen from outside. Please make sure that keys are not left in
easily accessible places, particularly hallways, where they can
sometimes be reached by a wire or fishing rod inserted through the
letterbox.

For
your information, Plus Four Market Research Ltd will be carrying
out a survey of about 1000 Tooting residents on behalf of Wandsworth
Council over the next few weeks. They will be calling at homes and
also interviewing people on the street. All interviewers will carry
market Research Society identity cards, together with a letter from
the council outlining the purpose of the survey.
A worrying figure recently came from Experian, the credit reference
agency. Apparently, five roads in the borough are in the top 25
for credit card fraud, which involves fraudsters running up lines
of credit or buying goods under assumed names, with one road in
the borough topping the list. Those most at risk appear to be aged
between 26 and 45, earned more than £50,000, rented their
home and lived in London; they are often company directors or run
their own business.
A full list of the roads is at:- http://tinyurl.com/6xoj25
Here
are the Metropolitan police's tips for avoiding identity fraud.
-
Be careful with your personal information. If you receive a telephone
call from a credit card company, bank or other retail company
asking to confirm certain details about yourself decline them
and ask to call them back preferably through a central switchboard.
Never give out personal details or passwords.
- When
destroying personal correspondence such as bank and credit card
statements consider a shredder or even burning them with garden
refuse. If you cannot do either then tear the papers up into very
small pieces and place in the refuse bin with other waste products,
or compost them with your green waste.
- If
you move address remember to inform all of the companies that
send personal information to you in the post. Always consider
re-directing your post with Royal Mail. If you fail to do this
people moving in might have free access to your personal details
and misappropriate them.
- Always
use an anti virus programme and firewall on your computer.
- Beware
of unsolicited emails. Do not respond to emails that have apparently
originated from your bank or other authority/company. Remember
that a bank will not ask for your details via unsolicited emails.
- Do
not post personal details on the internet which could collectively
be used to clone your identity.
- Instruct
your bank not to accept any payments abroad unless previously
authorised.

Please
be aware that there are a large number of counterfeit banknotes
in circulation in the borough. One business recently took over £300
worth in an evening, mainly £20 notes. If you are unsure about
a note, check for the quality of the paper, the metal strip, the
watermark, raised lettering and the hologram showing the value of
the note. If you have an ultra-violet light, it will show up the
value and in some cases, a random fleck. If in any doubt, refuse
it. If you are unlucky enough to find yourself in posssession of
one, please take it to the police.
A man died recently and another is seriously ill, after apparently
taking Ecstasy tablets in a nightclub in Brixton. There has also
been another similar incident in another club. If you know anyone
who might be tempted to take Ecstasy, please warn them. The tablets
in question are pink with small white dots on, or white with the
letter "G" and a number on the reverse.

I
would like to apologise to anyone who has not received some of the
recent briefings. This seems to have been caused by a recent change
in our IT equipment. I think we have sorted out the problems, but
there may still be the odd ommission.
Could you ask your neighbours, especially any that you feel might
be particularly vulnerable, to be careful in light of the following
incidents.
We have received information that a man described as a white male,
aged 40+, overweight, wearing glasses, dark hair (balding on top)
about 5' 10" has been calling people in the Northcote area.
He said that he was a builder, with ladders and a vehicle neaby,
and offered to clean their windows. He asks for £20 up front,
and then, surprise, surprise, he does not return.
1. Sunday 20th April at Aboyne Road, SW17 the 73 year old
and female occupier had a knock on the door at approximately 1645
hours. When she answered a male asked if he could borrow a pen,
as he needed to leave a note at one of the victim’s neighbours.
The victim did not keep the door open and the male suspect appeared
to leave.A few moments later, there was a second knock at the door.
This time it was a female. She also asked for a pen to leave a note
for a neighbour saying that she had a parcel to leave there. The
victim closed the door and went into her kitchen to find a pen and
paper, leaving the female suspect outside. On returning to the front
door, the victim opened the door to the female suspect and passed
her the pen and paper saying that the suspect could keep them. The
female suspect tried to involve the victim in a conversation, but
at this point the victim heard a ‘bump’ coming from
upstairs. On going to the foot of the stairs, the victim saw the
original male coming down her stairs. The victim shouted at the
male, demanding to know what he was doing in her house. The male
suspect replied that he had been using her toilet and was leaving.
The victim stepped out of the male’s way as he rushed past
her and made his way out of the venue via the front door, where
he joined the female suspect. After the suspect’s had gone
the victim went upstairs and discovered that her bedroom had been
ransacked, and that cash had been taken. It is belived the male
climbed through an open window to gain access.
The male is: white aged between 39 to 45 years, of fat build and
wearing a dark jacket and trousers.
The
female is : white, about 40 years, broad build with shoulder length
brown hair. At the time of the incident this suspect was wearing
a crop-top showing her midrff and jeans with boots.
2. Monday 21st April at Buttermere Drive, at approximately
1030 hours, the victim, a 73 year-old female, answered the doorbell
at her first floor council flat. The flats are currently having
renovation work carried out to the windows. On answering the door,
the victim saw two white males wearing white construction hard hats,
yellow hi-viz jackets and jeans. Both males were wearing official
looking ID cards hanging around their necks on lanyards. The males
told the victim that they were from the council and were going to
call on her on the following Thursday to replace the windows of
her flat. The males then told the victim that they needed to come
into the flat to examine the windows from the inside, and to see
if she needed any assistance to remove her curtains prior to the
work being carried out.The males asked to be taken into each room
of the flat in order to look at the windows. They were accompanied
at all times by the victim. The suspects then asked to see the victim’s
boiler and were shown into the kitchen where the boiler is located.
The suspects then removed the boiler cover, and told the victim
that it needed a spare part as it was leaking. They told the victim
that they were going to collect a spare part from their van, and
that the victim hadn’t to touch the boiler or try to light
it as it might explode. The suspects then left the flat and were
not seen again.Later the victim noticed the £40.00 was missing
and reported the matter to police.
Suspect
1 , white male aged between 30 and 40, was taller than the second
and spoken with a local accent.
Suspect
2 , white male aged between 30 and 40 also spoke with a local accent
and is described by the victim as being not much taller than her
self. (F505 to F507)

CID are appealing for information and witnesses to an assault.
Were you around the Cranmer Terrace SW17 area on 4 March
2008, between 6:30pm and 6:35pm? A lone female was approached
by three young males approx. 16-17 years old. At least one of the
youths was white.
The
female victim was punched, spat at and threats were made to her
life before the youths ran off. The victim went home but was later
taken to hospital and is now recovering having suffered bruising
and whiplash.
Prior
to the incident the victim witnessed what she thought was a female
being robbed or assaulted by the same group and police are anxious

There
was a burglary in Welham Road and the advice below on cold callers
is particularly relevant because an elderly Crowborough Road resident
- from a little further up the road - was recently conned out of
a large sum of money recently by a rogue "builder".
Message
from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:
Below
is this week's crime briefing and the one that you should have received
last week, which was delayed owing to circumstances beyond our control.
Trading standards officers in Wandsworth are warning local residents,
particularly the elderly, to be on their guard against rogue builders
who appear to be targeting the borough.
In
recent weeks the council has received a number of reports about
rogue traders calling on homes unannounced and persuading residents
to pay for work that is either unnecessary or ends up being done
very badly.
"Vulnerable
people are regularly ripped off by rogue traders. The work is often
needless and the victims are usually overcharged and sometimes bullied
and intimidated if they refuse to pay.
"Our
advice is to not let anyone into your house who calls unexpectedly.
If you do speak to them, do it through the door or from an upstairs
window - and never agree to employ them to carry out any work. We
would also urge neighbours to be alert to builders, in particular
roofers, who turn up to carry out such work and to report any suspicions
they have to trading standards.
"We
are working closely with the police to track down these con-artists,
but we do need residents to keep an eye out for their neighbours
- especially if they are elderly or vulnerable."
The
council is also appealing to bank and building society staff to
be on the lookout for elderly customers withdrawing large amount
of cash. They are being urged to try and glean what the money is
being used for and if they have any concerns that it may be suspicious,
to contact the police or trading standards.
Concern
about the activities of doorstep con-men led to an area covering
210 homes in Tooting to be declared a "no cold calling zone"
last month.
Residents in the area around Cowick Road are benefiting from new
safeguards protecting them and their homes from unscrupulous traders,
conmen, distraction burglars and high-pressure sales teams.
The
zone has been marked out using street signs that warn would-be offenders
that their activities will not be tolerated. Every household has
been issued with an information pack explaining how to say no to
unwanted callers and also given window stickers, useful leaflets
and contact telephone numbers for the police's safer neighbourhood
team as well as the council's trading standards team, housing department
and community safety division.
A
similar clampdown in West Putney last year led to a huge drop in
unexpected and unwanted callers, according to residents.
People
wanting to report suspicious traders to the council should call
020
8871 0803 and if possible provide details of any vans or
cars that are being used, including the registration number, plus
a description of the caller.
Anyone
wanting advice about home security or crime prevention can use the
same number to speak to an officer in the town hall's community
safety division.

The
police are looking for witnesses to an attempted robbery. In the
early hours of the 6th February, at approx 5am, the Balham High
Road Sainsburys was taking a delivery. The rear gates to the premises
were opened for the delivery and as the driver got out of his vehicle
to enter the premises on foot a silver motor vehicle believed to
be a Citroen drove into the yard area.
Six
black, male suspects dressed in dark clothing with hoods got out
of the vehicle and went into the loading bay area of the store.
All
the staff in the loading bay and shop floor were rounded up. The
suspects then unsuccessfully demanded to know where the safe was.
They
fled empty handed except for a mobile phone that was taken from
one of the staff. All the suspects then returned to the silver motor
vehicle and made off.
This
was a very frightening and distressing ordeal for the staff.

event, which was held at the Town Hall last year, where
the police were able to reunite a number of people with their stolen
property. As a result of the success, they will be repeating it
this Saturday, February 9, between 10.30am and 4pm
in rooms 122 and 123 at the main Town Hall, Wandsworth High
Street.
The
goods include a range of electrical goods, bikes, jewellery and
other stolen loot.
Officers from the council's community safety unit will be on hand
to offer a range of crime prevention advice and will be focusing
on promoting the use of shredders to combat identity theft. They
will also be able to provide information about joining or setting
up a neighbourhood watch group, which can be a good deterrent against
burglars.

Tooting & Balham Crime Report 30th January 2008
Chief Inspector's Newsletter and Press Release on "Bogus Callers":
The
files attached below have reports on burglary and street crime (note
that car crimes are not included).
Message
from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:
This
incident happened in the Putney area recently, but could become
more widespread. Some years ago this was quite common, with groups
of dealers coming to London from the South coast. They are usually
very careful not to actually steal items, but will con elderly or
confused people into selling their property at considerably below
market value, although in this case they did steal.
The
victim was 90 years of age. Two men knocked at her door and asked
if she had any clocks that needed repairing. She let them in and
they generally made a nuisance of themselves by looking at some
antiques and asking if they were for sale. She declined their offers
and they eventually left. Nothing is believed to be stolen at this
stage.
Approx
40 minutes later two different men knocked at her door, claiming
to be associates of the first two. She let them in and they again
attempted to pressurise her into selling various antiques. She declined
but eventually they persuaded her to put the kettle on. When she
returned to the room they had left with several items of property.
Only
one description at this stage: White male, mid 40's , 5 ft 8ins,
slim build, wearing dark coloured overcoat and suit. He was holding
a booklet with a picture of a clock on it.
A
neighbour of the victim also had men knocking on her door.
Time of day was from 1500 hours to 1700 hours.
Please warn anyone you know who might be vulnerable to this type
of thing.

A
large number of you did not get the briefing last week. This was
due to a fault on the council's mail servers, which prevented external
mail from being correctly delivered. I apologise for any inconvenience
this may have caused. I understand that the problem has now been
rectified, so I have included last week's briefing with the current
one.

Message

Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:
I
failed to include the burglaries on last week's crime briefing,
I'm afraid, so I have included them on this week's. Apologies.
Here
is this week's crime briefing.
Please
be aware that there have been a number of thefts of parts from high
value cars, such as Porsche, Aston Martin and Audi. These include
car bumbers, wings and number plates.
The
advice from the Crime Prevention Officer is to park the vehicle
in a secure place if possible, such as a garage or outside your
own home, in a well lit area with good natural surveillance. Consider
marking any vulnerable parts with an ultra violet pen, using your
postcode and house number or with a proprietary system, such as
Selectamark DNA. This might not prevent the thjeft but could help
recover the parts if they are stolen.
Contact your car alarm supplier and see if it is possible to extend
the alarm to cover items such as the bumpers, so that it is triggered
when the item is detached from the car.
You
may notice a slight change to the briefings this week. I have altered
them so that the briefing areas coincide with the three parliamentary
constituencies in the borough, Battersea, Putney and Tooting. This
mainly affects Balham and Fairfield wards. You will still all get
the correct briefing for your ward, but it may be associated with
a slightly different group of wards.

We
have had reports of people calling door to door offering to do a
free house survey on behalf of a company supplying external coatings.
Some of these companies are very dodgy, to say the least, and the
quality of work is not always of a high standard. If you have any
doubts at all about anyone calling in this manner, send them away
and contact Trading Standards at :- tradingstandards@wandsworth.gov.uk
