As last week, be on the look out for bogus gas/electricity/water officials who try to con their way into homes to steal money or valuables - the elderly as particularly at risk, and they have struck in this week's report....so spread the word. If in doubt, keep them out!

Sadly two burglaries in our road feature in this week's report.

By the way, if you are thinking of getting a new car, check the new Car Theft Index, published by the Home Office. This shows those cars most at risk of being stolen, and also includes useful advice on increasing car security. It can be found at www.secureyourmotor.gov.uk.

A very quiet week...but this is probably because some crimes have not yet been reported due to the Christmas and New Year break, so will appear in the following weeks' documents.

A lot of incidents this week - but none in our immediate area. However the report also includes the following two messages:

A Message from the Fire Brigade & Council:

The winter months can potentially spell danger for older people in the capital. Nearly 60 per cent of people who die in fires are aged 60 or over and the winter period is the time of greatest risk as use of heaters and cooking appliances increases.

Wandsworth Council are half way through a programme to install smoke alarms in all council flats and houses. The London Fire Brigade will also carry out a free survey in privately rented or owned flats and houses occupied by the elderly or vulnerable, and where necessary, provide free smoke alarms. Older people – or members of their family and carers – who would like a fire safety check carried out can telephone 08000 28 44 28 free of charge, email smokealarms@londonfire.gov.uk or visit the website at www.london-fire.gov.uk for more information.

Scams and Cons:

Please be aware that there are gangs of people in the area offering to lay tarmac in your drive, often intimating that they are connected with legitimate road surfacing contractors working in the area. The work is usually of a very poor standard, is often not completed, and is also very expensive. If you are approached by anyone offering such services, Trading Standards would like to be informed; they can be contacted on 020 8871 7720 or email tradingstandards@wandsworth.gov.uk .

If you feel that you have been the victim of a crime, please call the police.

There is a Department of Trade & Industry web site giving details of various other frauds and scams, at www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/scams/page1.htm and another useful site is at www.ripofftipoff.net which also allows you to report incidents
