Tooting & Balham Crime Report - 2nd June 2004:

The file attached below has the full report on burglary and street crime (note that car crimes are not included in these reports).

Police have had some reports of spare wheels being stolen from cars in the Streatham/Tooting area, particularly Toyotas, where they are accessible from underneath the vehicle. If you feel that your car might be vulnerable consider either putting the spare in the boot, out of sight, or fitting some form of security device to prevent it being stolen. In some cases this might be achieved with a padlock and chain; some vehicle manufacturers have purpose-built devices to cope with the problem, and they should be available from main dealers.

The summer weather has brought out some thieves out, as well as the flowers. We have had one or two cases already of houses being entered through doors left open whilst the occupiers are in the garden. Please take care not to leave an open invitation for them; in particular do not leave the keys in the lock. If you need to leave windows open for ventilation, make sure you can lock them in a position wide enough for ventilation but too small for a thief to reach or climb through. Most double glazing units have this facility, and devices for other types of window are available from locksmiths.

Tooting & Balham Crime Report - 28th April 2004:

The file attached below has the full report on burglary and street crime (note that car crimes are not included in these reports).

Only one report in or near our watch area - a mugging in Salterford Road. As usual a fair bit of street crime in Mitcham Road, and we're starting to see some burglaries through unsecured windows as the weather gets warmer. Be warned - always secure windows and doors. If you want to leave windows open at night for ventilation, fit a window lock which allows you to lock the window slightly open.

Tooting & Balham Crime Report - 31st March 2004:

The file attached below has the full report on burglary and street crime (note that car crimes are not included in these reports). Unfortunately there was no report last week owing to technical difficulties.

Lots of street crime on Mitcham Road this week - please keep your wits about you when shopping or walking to/from the Underground station.

Police have had information that schoolchildren are damaging cars in the Mandrake Road area by scratching them with keys. Could you please take care when parking, particularly before 9am and around 3-4pm, and report any suspicious activity near cars to the police at Tooting.

A woman has been calling door to door in the Tooting area late at night (up to 2am), claiming to have been locked out of her house, and asking for cash for her taxi fare home, or coming out with similar stories to con money out of people. She is dark skinned with a burnt or pock marked face. Please warn your neighbours, and if she does call on you, please let the police know as soon as possible.

There is concern that cashpoints (ATMs) are being targeted by high tech data theives - see the example in this attachment (click to download - 206k):

There have been quite a few burglaries where property has been stolen through the letterbox. Usually keys are taken, enabling the burglar to return at a later date or to take a car parked outside. The keys are taken by inserting a tool, like a fishing rod or stiff wire, through the letterbox to retrieve items nearby. To prevent this there are several precautions you can take.

1) Make sure that there is nothing within reach of the door.
2) Keep keys in a secure, preferably locked, box
3) Fit a cage internally over the letterbox

Police are still getting reports of elderly people being the victims of theft by people posing as gas, water, electricity or council officials. Please make sure that anyone you consider vulnerable, especially the elderly, is warned to be on the alert for this type of offence. Ask them to check identification, and if in any doubt at all, refuse entry. The caller could be advised to call back when the potential victim has someone else with them to assist in identification.
