Tooting & Balham Crime Report - 6th Sept 2007:

The files attached below have reports on burglary and street crime (note that car crimes are not included).

Message from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:

There have been a number of recent reports of people calling door to door, claiming to be doing surveys on behalf of the council or the police. As far as we are aware, there are NO surveys of this kind being conducted in the borough. Anyone claiming to be doing a survey should be refused entry, and the police should be informed.

We have had reports from Fircroft and Mandrake Roads of a woman calling at doors asking for money for the electricity meter She appears to be of mixed race, late twenties to early thirties, 5' 8". tall, slender build. Described as striking and attractive with olive colour skin with a London accent and was well spoken. She had shoulder-length dark coloured curly or wavy hair and wore a light coloured trench coat On one occasion she wore gold rimmed spectacles. If you have any information, please call 999 at the time or (after the event) the Safer Neighbourhood Teams on 0208 721 2701 (Tooting) 0208 721 2424 (Bedford) 0208 721 2425 (Nightingale).

Message from a neighbour by email:

Neighbours I believe that I have just been conned though fortunately did not actually hand over any money to an absolutely charming 30 year old man who knocked on door, claimed to have not long moved into the area and to be raising money for Cancer Research by participating in a charity shoutout penalty arrangement at Emirates Stadium with Arsenal team. Extremely plausible. I was happy to make a commitment but declined to pay until after the event. I then googled 'Arsenal chartity penalties' and saw that in the Muswell Hill area there a fraudster was doing exactly this. I would say that the description was the same. I will alert Keeley and team however thought that first off I would send this off

Message from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:

Last weekend's Aladdin's cave exercise was a graet success. Over 500 people visited the display; 11 people were re-united with property that they had lost, and there is a possibility that some others will get back articles which had been recovered just a day or two earlier.

To ensure that property recovered by the police is returned to the rightful owners we reccomend that you postcode your valuables with an ultra violet pen. Full details are available at http://www.met.police.uk/crimeprevention/markit.htm

Sad to see a burglary in our street this week. Please do keep all gates, doors and windows secure and lock away garden tools and ladders which burglarrs would find useful.

Tooting & Balham Crime Report - 20th July 2007:

The files attached below have reports on burglary and street crime (note that car crimes are not included). Sadly there were some muggings at bus stops in Southcroft Road this week.

Message from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:

An Aladdin's cave of stolen goods is to be put on display at the Town Hall next week in a bid to reunite the borough's burglary victims with items they have lost. The goods, which include a range of electrical goods, jewellery and other stolen loot, will be on display in the town hall on Saturday, July 28 between 10.30am and 4pm.

The items have all been recovered from suspected burglars having been unearthed by the police during the course of their inquiries. Now the police and council have teamed up to try and return these items to their rightful owners. Some form of proof of ownership will be required before the items are handed over.

The property will be on display in the main Town Hall in Wandsworth High Street, in rooms 122 and 123. Officers from the council's Community Safety unit will be on hand to offer crime prevention advice while representatives from Neighbourhood Watch and Victim Support will also be in attendance.

Burglary victims often wonder why their house has been chosen. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured. Any of the following factors can increase the risk of a break-in:

  • Side gates open
  • Accessible windows open
  • Ladders left out, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible windows ·
  • Garden tools available to force entry ·
  • Untrimmed hedges or high fences preventing natural surveillance

Other factors which may increase the likelihood of a break-in include:

  • Milk bottles or parcels on the doorstep ·
  • Newspapers and mail in the letter box ·
  • Unlit houses after dark ·
  • All windows shut in very hot weather

Simple steps which can reduce the chances of being burgled are:

  • Prevent letterbox burglaries by storing keys away from the front door ·
  • Do not label your house keys in case you lose them and they fall into the wrong hands.
  • Where possible, try to keep valuables out of sight from windows.
  • Install timers which switch lights or radios on and off automatically.
  • If you're away have a neighbour or friend pop round to clear your letterbox or doorstep.
  • Encourage a neighbour to park on your drive.
  • If going out after dark, draw the curtains, leave some lights on and a radio playing.
  • If you are away for extended periods:
    • Cancel the delivery of milk and newspapers ·
    • Disconnect the telephone answering machine, or re-word your greeting message to give the impression that you are only temporarily unable to answer.
    • Enlist the help of a neighbour, friend or relative to keep a regular eye on your property and keep the front door clear of deliveries.
    • If you are prepared to leave a key with a willing neighbour/relative, ask for curtains to be drawn and lights to be put on at night. If snow is on the ground a few footprints will make the house appear inhabited.
    • Check your insurance policy. Some insurance policies for contents don't cover you if you are away for more than 30 days.
    • Set your burglar alarm.

.
Please be aware that your local Police have recently received reports of an Asian man calling at the homes of older people in the area of Upper Tooting and Tooting Bec.

The man is described as being about 5 feet 9 inches tall, appearing to be aged between 35 and 40 years old and has short dark hair. He has been asking for money sometimes using the excuse that his car has been clamped.

We would ask that you look out for those who are the most vulnerable in your road to work with us in ensuring they do not fall foul of this man. If anyone raises your suspicion please do not hesitate to contact the Police. If you can, always make a note of descriptions of any people and vehicles involved in suspicious behaviour.

FROM EMAIL FROM WANDSWORTH COUNCIL
:
Tooting & Balham Crime Report - 11th July 2007:

The files attached below have reports on burglary and street crime (note that car crimes are not included).

Message from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:

Here is the latest crime briefing for your area. I have also enclosed a Wandsworth police borough newsletter, introducing the police borough commander, Ch Supt, Stewart Low.

You may have noticed that there are a large number of burglaries each week where the method used is to slip the front door latch. A burglar recently arrested in the borough told police that he always tries the door before breaking in, and if he finds that the mortice lock is locked, he doesn't bother trying to get in. He knows that to open it he will have to use additional force, breaking the door and drawing more attention to himself, and also risking injury, which could mean leaving a DNA sample behind.

To avoid becoming a victim, please ensure that you lock the mortice lock securely behind you whenever you leave the house. (If you haven't got a mortice lock fitted, please investigate fitting one.) It is not advisable to use it whilst indoors, because of the risk of being locked inside in case of fire, but ordinary finger operated bolts fitted internally will be very effective and can be easily released in an emergency.

Many of these burglaries involve the theft of the victim's car, using their own keys. Please don't leave keys in view, even when you are at home, and don't leave them within reach of the letterbox, as they are often stolen using the "fishing rod" method, and hooking them through the letterbox.

I understand from the police that they have large quantities of valuable items that they know have been stolen, but they are unable to return as they cannot identify the owners. Please make a note of the serial numbers of any items that have them, such as electrical goods and cameras. If valuable items do not have numbers, consider postcoding them, using your postcode followed by your house or flat number, eg SW182PU77. This can be done using an ultra-violet pen, obtainable from locksmiths, DIY shops and some stationers, or can be scratched on where appropriate. Finally, take photos of hard to describe things, like paintings, china, silverware, etc., and keep the photos, together with theserial numbers you have note, in a safe place, preferably off-site, such as with a relative.

There have been reoports from some parts of the borough that people claiming to be dustmen have been calling at households offering to take away bulky refuse, such as building rubble for a fee. They pocket the money and the rubble is never collected. They wear clothing similar to that worn by the council's contractor, Biffa. Biffa employees are strictly forbidden to tout for business in this way and strict disciplinary action will be taken against anyone found doing this. Any approaches for money by people claiming to be refuse collectors should be reported to the police straight away or to the council's waste management team on (020) 8871 8558

Message from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:

We have recently been informed of a technique being used on Northcote ward to obtain money by deception. A white male with a shaved head, one earring aged 30-35 years attends the house, stating he is there to collect money for windows cleaned at that address a few day before.

  • He confirms the resident was not present while he supposedly cleans them.
  • This is believed to be false therefore we advise money should not be handed over. Call 999.
  • If you have heard of incidents similar to this and have any more information please email Northcote.snt@met.police.uk.
  • The male is coming to the area in a vehicle, however at the present we have no description of the vehicle or a registration number.
  • Please pass this on to friends and family living in the area, to avoid becoming a victim.

We have also been asked to remind you that a large number of burglaries are being carried out using doors and windows that have been left open by the occupiers. With any luck,. we will be getting some warmer weather soon, and the temptation to leave windows and doors open will be even greater. Please ensure that you shut, and lock, ALL your doors and windows when you go out, even if it is only for a short time. We recently had a burglary where the victim was in her own garden when it happened, so please take care.

Message from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:

Please note that there is now a new secure website for reporting crimes online, at https://online.met.police.uk/ . This is only for non-urgent reports, where an immediate police response is NOT required. This is a London only site, replacing the original national one, so if your crime is outside London, please refer to the local police web site.

Thefts from parking meters are still common throughout the borough. If you have a meter near you, please keep an eye on it. The thieves sometimes use brute force on them, but there have been some instances of keys being used.
If you have any doubts if you see someone tampering with a machine, please contact the police straight away.

Now that the weather is starting to warm up, please be careful about leaving windows open when you are away from the house. A lot of burglars find this the easiest method of entry.

We are also getting a lot of thefts of cars, after the burglar has fished the keys through the front door letterbox, using a fishing rod or similar implement. Most of these are during the night, but not exclusively. Please ensure that your keys and any other valuables are kept well away from the front door or any open window

Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council:

Thieves are stealing large sums of money from the pay and display parking machines all over the borough. Suspects were recently observed sporting short crew cuts and driving a white Renault hire van.

The council's official cash collection contractor works between the hours of 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday so if you see anyone tampering with a machine OUTSIDE these times, i.e. after 5pm in the evening or before 7am, or at anytime over the weekend, please call the Police immediately and give them a full description including vehicle registration, if possible. You are advised NOT to approach anyone you suspect of stealing.

If anyone has information they wish to pass to a council officer, call Tim Shishodia on 020 8871 8050

The latest Communities Together newsletter contains an appeal re the recent murder at Clapham. Please look at it at:- http://www.met.police.uk/communities_together/docs/bulletin_104.pdf

A very recent incident reported to us was of a man calling at the door, claiming to be from Television Licensing, and demanding payment for a TV licence. The potential victim had her wits about her and refused, but he did seem to know something about her licence (which was not due for renewal for some time) and was very persuasive. The genuine people will not call unless you have no licence at alll or it has expired. Don't forget that people over 75 are entitled to a free licence.

We have had another incident reported of a man claiming to be from the TV licensing agency, and demanding payment on the doorstep. This one was in the Southfields area, and the man was Asian, smartly dressed and very aggressive. He seemed to have some inside knowledge of when the potential victim's licence ran out, but was sent away empty-handed.

There are also two appeals for witnesses (after the crime reports). The first to a violent robbery in Nimrod Road Tooting in December 2006, the second to a violent assault on 12th November 2006 near Tooting Broadway tube.

A recent incident in the Roehampton area has been reported to us concerning a blind lady who answered the door one evening to a woman who asked for change of a £20 note. The number of distraction burglaries is still too high. Apart from the usual ploy of posing as water board workers, we have had a couple of instances (unfortunately, not reported as crimes by the victims) where two women have pretended to be from Age Concern and also from the council.

Please warn any vulnerable members of your watch about this tactic, and advise them NOT to open the door to strangers. There is a worrying tendency by some of these people to force their way in once the door has been opened, and this will almost certainly result in serious injury before long.
