A
little bit of good news from the Latchmere Team. On 19 May 2009
at about 6pm two males were arrested for possession with intent
to supply cocaine on the Winstanley Estate.
Officers
from the Latchmere Safer Neighbourhoods Team had received information
that males were dealing drugs on the estate. PCSOs saw two males
matching the description and circulated details on their radios,
and other officers went to the scene. As they approached the males
they began to run away; they gave chase and the suspects were detained.
One of the suspects was seen to throw a bag towards a hedge, this
was subsequently found to contain approximately 50 wraps of cocaine.
Both suspects were arrested.
You will notice that there are still quite a number of burglaries
where the thief has bypassed the communal door of a block of flats
and then either slipped the latch or forced the door of a flat.
If you live in a flat, please ensure that you never let anyone in
who you do not know lives there, and always make sure that the communal
door is properly shut. If it only has a simple latch on it, it is
not sufficient, and it should be fitted with a decent quality lock
suitable for communal doors. Most locksmiths can give advice on
the type of lock required. As far as your own flat is concerned,
do not rely on the communal door to keep burglars out, and ensure
that your door is fitted with a good quality mortice lock or rim
lock, and that it is locked behind you whenever you go out. As a
very rough guide, if you cannot lock the door with a key after you
leave, it is probably not good enough.
There are also an increasing number of burglaries involving the
theft of keys from houses and flats overnight, which are subsequently
used to steal cars from outside. I understand there were over 16,000
incidents like this last year. Never leave your keys within reach
of the front door, and ideally, use a a key safe within the house.
If this is not practical, take the keys to your bedroom with you.

Shoplifter Attacks:
On
29 April 2009 a shoplifter was stopped outside Sainsbury’s,
Balham High Road by a security officer. The officer found a bottle
of spirits in the suspect’s own bag. When asked for his receipt,
the suspect pulled out a hypodermic needle from his shirt breast
pocket and attempted to stab the officer in his stomach. The officer
grabbed the ‘union jack flag’ bag from the suspect but
at some point during the struggle the hypodermic needle entered
the officer’s right hand causing a puncture wound.
The
suspect left the scene. The needle was not located at the scene,
although the suspect’s bag was retained. The victim was immediately
admitted to hospital where he was treated.
The
suspect is described as being a white male, 40 - 45 years old, wearing
a black jacket, white shirt with blue lines, blue trousers and carrying
a very distinctive union jack flag bag (see attached photos).
If you have any information that could help police with their enquiries,
please call, DC Sam BASSETT at Wandsworth CID on 0208 247
8703 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime
Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
Clapham Common Robbery:
On 11th May 2009 at 12:10 a 37-year old white female was pushing
a baby in a pushchair, along the path that leads from The Avenue
towards the clay football pitches on Clapham Common, when she was
robbed. Two men ran up behind her. One grabbed her around the neck
whilst the other tried to pull off her diamond engagement ring.
The victim was strangled to the point of unconsciousness.
When she regained consciousness one of the suspects told her to
take off the ring. She did this and the suspects then ran off towards
The Avenue.
The
victim did not see the male who strangled her. The male who took
the ring was described as black, aged around 20 years and was wearing
a navy blue hooded top.
The
platinum ring contains a large square diamond that has rounded off
corners and is flanked by two smaller diamonds. Have you seen this
ring?
If
you have any information that could help police with their enquiries,
please call the Robbery Unit at Wandsworth on 0208 247 8871
or to remain
anonymous, call Crime
Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
Debt Collector Scam:
An
elderly gentleman in the borough received a letter, apparently from
a debt recovery firm, demanding payment of an outstanding bill.
He phoned them some time later, after a spell in hospital, and they
demanded payment of an outstanding debt for some goods bought by
mail order. He had never bought anything mail order and refused,
but they were very insistent, still demanding payment, which he
still refused. This may have been a genuine error on the part of
a legitimate company, but it appears much more likely that it was
a scam to obtain money. Please warn any vulnerable neighbours.

Despite the continued reduction in burglary, Wandsworth Police would
like to remind you of a few simple steps you can take to protect
yourself and your home:
-
Unless you are in the same room do not leave windows and doors
open or unlocked, particularly if you are on the ground or first
floor.
-
Do not leave valuables including Car keys on display or within
easy reach behind windows and doors even if they are closed and
locked.
- Lock
away ladders, garden tools and other items that burglars could
use to force an entry.
- Senior
citizens especially should ensure that any strangers knocking
at the door saying they are workmen show correct identification.
Council tenants can also check with the council whether any maintenance
work is being carried out in their area.
- A
simple test of home security is - if you can get into your home
without keys - so can a burglar.
More detailed advice on crime prevention can be obtained by contacting
your local Safer
Neighbourhoods Team.

1)
If you are tempted to do any gardening over the next few days, with
this nice weather, don't forget to put your garden tools away safely
after you finish. We are already starting to get burglaries reported
where the thief has used a garden spade or fork to force open windows
and doors. Inevitably these are taken from insecure garden sheds
or just left around in the garden, and they are a perfect tool for
a burglar.
2) Another crime
that is becoming more common is the theft of cars from outside the
owner's home after the keys have been stolen from the house. Sometimes
this is achieved by the thief using a fishing rod or similar implement
through the letterbox in order to steal the keys, and sometimes
the burglar enters the house or flat through an insecure door. Please
make sure that any keys are kept well out of reach of thieves, and
that your front door is properly secured at night.
3) Police are appealing for witnesses following a shooting incident
in Putney on Monday March 30.
At
approximately 5.55pm shots were fired at a silver Mercedes in Upper
Richmond Road at the junction with Dryburgh Road. A motorcycist
and pillion passenger are believed to have fired shots slightly
injuring one of the three occupants in the car.
The
motorcyclist was last seen driving at speed in Upper Richmond Road
towards Roehampton. The injured person was male. No-one else was
injured.
Anyone
who witnessed the incident or can assist police should contact DS
Trevor White of Operation Trident, tel 020 8785 8580
4) Apparently there have been a number of instances in the Balham
area where burglars have attempted to remove the beading around
windows in an attempt to enter. Please have a look around your ground
floor windows to be sure this has not happened to you.
5) I have also attached a copy of a new sticker that is available
for applying to the inside of windows or doors as a deterrent to
burglars. The actual size is approx. 10cm square. If you would like
any of them, please contact hillside@andysteele.com

Here
is the latest crime briefing for your area. Quite a number of you
have expressed their unhappiness about the amount of information
currently being witheld from the crime briefings. I am pleased to
say that we are now back to normal, after a slight hiatus.
Wandsworth Burglary Squad are investigating three burglaries, committed
by 2 men who have posed as police officers. These crimes have occured
in the last ten days in the Balham and Earlsfield areas. There are
similarities in the methods used by the offenders and the descriptions
given of the 2 suspects in each of the burglaries is similar.
DS Rory Wilkinson of the burglary squad “We are actively pursuing
a number of lines of enquiry in an attempt to arrest these callous
criminals. The victims in each case are elderly and vulnerable.
Anyone with information regarding these people is asked to contact
police or crimestoppers.”
The description of the two suspects is as follows.
1. White male with light brown/blond hair, about 5’08”
tall aged roughly 25-32 years old.
2. White male with brown hair, about 5’10” tall aged
roughly 25-32 years old
The burglaries have been taking place in the afternoon and the evening,
between 1.00pm and 6.30pm.
The suspects have called at addresses and have given a number of
stories including:
That they are police officers and they wish to inspect the money
within the premises to check whether or not there are any counterfeit
notes in the house.
That they are investigating a crime and property has been found
in your garden, we need to check your money to see whether any is
missing.
Police officers will never call at an address and ask to check your
money. Always ask for identification if there is any doubt in your
mind call police. Never open the door to unexpected callers without
verifying the identification of the person at the door.”
If you have any information about these offences, the Burglary
Squad number is 0208 247 8770
The Office of Fair Trading is running a national scheme called SCAMNESTY,
aimed at collating information about scam letters. Many people become
victims of scams and can lose considerable amounts of money, up
to £30,000 in one case. Typical scams offer a winning ticket
or prize in an overseas lottery (which you have not entered) and
ask for an administration fee, or require you to buy something in
order to receive a prize.
To support this scheme, Wandsworth Council Trading Standards and
Community Safety are placing bins in all the libraries in the borough
(other than Wandsworth and Tooting libraries, which are temporarily
closed) , the concourse of the Town Hall and Welbeck House, Shopmobility,
Garratt Lane and in some supermarkets, including Asda, Clapham Junction
and Sainsbury's, Garratt Lane, for two week, between 2-15 February.
If you put any letters that you suspect to be scams into the bin,
at the end of the period the letters wil be analysed and any intelligence
information that can be gathered will be passed to the police and
the Office of Fair Trading for them to take action. ALL YOUR LETTERS
WILL REMAIN STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL.
Further information on SCAMNESTY is at www.tinyurl.com/brmcaz

IDENTITY THEFT WARNING:
Please
be aware that a watch member has reported their bin bags stolen
this evening, possibly in an attempt to discover names, addresses
or other details to commit fraud or identity theft.
Another
watch member was the victim of identity theft earlier in the year
and reports that it requires lots of time and effort to regain control
of your credit and identity. That person now has a CIFAS Protective
Registration to protect their identity.
Some
basic rules are as follows:
- Do
not put anything showing your name and address in the bin or recycling
bags
- Always
shred or burn anything showing your name and address - especially
if it also contains any other details, such as account or customer
reference numbers
- Always
carefully verify the identity of anyone phoning you claiming to
be from your bank or other organisation. Don't be pressurised
- genuine callers won't mind you checking their identiy
- The
best thing to do if called unexpectedly is to take the person's
name and extension and call them back on a number shown on letters
from the organisation or on their website
- Never
give any personal information to anyone phoning or emailing you
unexpectedly. Banks will never ask for your PIN or whole password
if they contact you.
- Remember
that details such as your date of birth and mother's maiden name
must never be revealed unless you are certain that you are talking
to who you think you are and then only if absolutely necessary.
These details are exactly what fraudsters need to commit fraud
in your name
- Always
check all your statements for transactions you don't recognise
and monitor your credit report via the main credit agencies

Appeal
for witnesses:
A murder inquiry has been launched after Nathan Douglas, aged 20,
was stabbed to death in Wandsworth on Monday 3 November.
Officers
were called at approximately 11:30pm to reports that a man had been
stabbed in Lebanon Road, SW18. The London Ambulance Service attended,
but Nathan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nathan's
next of kin have been informed and the post mortem that took place
on 4 November at St Georges Hospital mortuary gave the cause of
death as a puncture wound to the neck.
An
incident room has opened at Sutton under Detective Inspector Russ
Taylor, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.
Detective
Inspector Taylor, said: "At this early stage we believe the
victim has arrived in the area of Cromford Road in a silver Renault
Megane at around 11.15pm. The car then drove over to Lebanon Road
where Nathan left his friends and went to meet someone. A short
time later he has returned suffering from at least one stab wound
and the police were called. We are particularly keen to hear from
anyone who saw the car arrive and its subsequent movements, as well
as man who was seen to run along Cromford Road shortly after the
incident."
Anyone
with information is asked to call the incident room on 020
8721 4155; if you wish to remain anonymous please call
Crimestoppers
on 0800 555 111.
On 17 October 2008 Brenda Collins was sentenced
to a 6 year custodial sentence. She had pleaded guilty to 5 counts
of burglary by way of artifice (deception burglary) and also had
a further 6 artifice burglary offences taken into consideration.
Collins
was once employed by an agency as a care worker but became involved
in drug taking. To feed her habit she used her knowledge of care
home facilities to prey on the vulnerable and steal property. She
was targeting sheltered homes for the elderly in Wandsworth Borough.
The eldest victim was 102 years old and other victims were house-bound
or confined to wheelchairs. Two of the victims have passed away
since the offence took place; however, there is no suspicion of
the crime having caused their deaths.
Being
a victim in her own home had such an adverse affect on one elderly
female it left her feeling that she could no longer look after herself
or feel safe in her own home and as a result was moved into a local
nursing home, losing her independence. All victims were badly affected
by the crime as they all lived in secure housing and some felt that
they had been able to leave their doors open in this safe environment.
There were burglaries and street crimes in 13 streets in
the area covered by this briefing; that means that there were about
856 locations where this sort of crime was NOT committed.

Have
you got a smoke alarm?
The
London Fire Brigade aims to fit life-saving smoke alarms in every
home in Wandsworth borough. I have two referral forms which will
enable you to get a free smoke alarm and Home
Safety Check by FireFighters from our local station. If
you would like one, please contact
Hillside Watch by email. First come, first served - I can get
more too!
There
are events in Not In My Neighbourhood Week very
close to our area (see link below in Steve Selby's message for full

14th October:

safety awareness and community safety presentations, Furzedown
Project and Roshni House. Staffed by London Fire Brigade
