Message from Steve Selby,
Community Safety Division, Wandsworth Council
There have been a number of burglaries recently where keys have
been stolen overnight, possibly by the use of a fishing rod or similar
through the letterbox. The thief will then often steal the owner's
car from outside the premises. Please ensure that all your keys
are both out of sight and out of reach of the letterbox. It is possible
to fit a guard internally to prevent this, available from most locksmiths.
There
are still too many distraction burglaries, with the criminals posing
as water board, gas or electricity workers. Please ask your vulnerable
neighbours not to open the door unless they are absolutely sure
of the identity of the caller. Police figures show that once they
have opened the door, they become much more likely to allow the
caller in, even though they are aware of the possibility of being
a victim.
I
have been asked to point out that the dustmen in Wandsworth are
not allowed to solicit for tips at Christmas. People posing as dustmen
have already managed to con some people out of money, and the advice
is to call the police if anyone calls on you asking for a Christmas
box.

The next delivery of the Thomson/Yellow Pages telephone directories
is due to start on 15th December in all parts of the borough, lasting
two or three weeks. Whilst the company concerned endeavours to leave
them out of sight of the street, there will be occasions when they
will be visible. If your neighbour's directories are left in view,
could you please take them in, so as not to indicate to a burglar
that the house or flat is empty.
Every
year, in the period leading up to Christmas, there are a number
of burglaries where presents have been stolen, after being left
in full view under the Chistmas tree. Try not to be a victim and
avoid disappointing the family, by ensureing that they cannot be
seen from the street, either by moving them or drawing the curtains.
Most electronic goods, bicycles, jewellery, etc., can be registered
free at www.immobilise.com
which may help to recover them if stolen, and of course, you should
encourage the recipients of any gifts to postcode them. Perhaps
a UV pen on the Christmas tree?

A reminder that the AGM of the Wandsworth Borough Neighbourhood
Watch Association will be held at 7pm on Monday 9th October 2006,
at the Council Chambers, Wandsworth Town Hall, Wandsworth High Street,
SW18.
If
you are interested in standing for election, please contact Sylvie
Chrzanowska by email at snchrzanowska@waitrose.com
A man and a woman were recently seen in the Putney area searching
through dustbins. When they realised they were being watched they
went away, but it is possible they were looking for information
to help them in identity theft. This is a growing problem which
you can help to prevent by ensuring that you destroy any personal
information on documents before putting them
in the bin. The best way is to use a shredder; these can be bought
very
cheaply now, and the resulting product can be composted along with
your kitchen/garden waste

Furzedown Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team
Tooting Police Station
Just a brief e mail, for those who did not attend the last Ward
Meeting.
Now that Furzedown has a full Safer neighbourhood team, we are required
to fall in line with the SNT Model met wide, and this means that
we are now required to have a 'set' ward panel. This means we must
have a panel of people which we meet with every two months who look
at and assess issues across the ward and set our priorities for
us, as opposed to us deciding what issues we tackle. We then feed
back to the panel at the next meeting on the progress we have made.
We will still have public meetings, and will obviously look at all
the issues across the Ward, however those discussed by the Ward
Panel would be what we work towards most often.
If
anyone is interested in becoming a panel member, please contact
me and I will pass your details on to the Chairman of our current
meetings, to look at picking the Panel. The Panel will not be picked
by Police and we are looking at a variety of different people to
fill these places. Local shopkeepers, residents, faith leaders,
Neighbourhood Watch coordinators etc
Kind
Regards
Keeley WEBB PC 863WW
