FROM EMAIL FROM WATCHLINK UNIT, WANDSWORTH COUNCIL:
Prison Absconder Sought By Police:
The
Metropolitan Police Service is calling on the public to help trace
an abscondee from prison who repeatedly preys on the elderly in
London and the South East.
Allen
Stephen Johnson, who is now 63 years old, absconded from HMP Leyhill,
an open prison, in March 2000 and is wanted to complete that sentence
and in connection with a series of offences committed since that
date.
Enquiries
by the Burglary Artifice Desk of the Service Intelligence Unit
(SCD10) have linked Johnson to offences committed in Islington,
Fulham, Marylebone, Newham, Enfield, Wandsworth,
Kensington, Barnet, Barking and Dagenham, Richmond upon Thames,
Paddington, Bromley, Havering and Tower Hamlet.
DC Simon Clarke from SCD10 said: "Johnson is still thought
to be offending in the London area but is known to travel extensively
throughout the south coast. He uses guesthouse and hostel accommodation
for short periods at a time and has a criminal history stretching
back 50 years.
"His
normal method is to befriend the victims in the street and then
use a specially tailored story to gain their confidence before stealing
property from their homes or stealing their cheques."
Johnson
is known to use a large number of aliases including: Alan Johnson,
Alan Jackson, Sam Cutler, Peter Burridge, Brian Saunders, Allen
Williams, Sam Wilson, Steven Johnson, Alan Hinkley, David Cox, Colin
Mayhew, John Townsend, Brian Willis.
Johnson
is white, 5ft 7ins with hazel coloured eyes, is of proportionate
build with grey receding hair, he has numerous tattoos on his arms
including "Mum" and "Rita".
Anyone
who recognises the man pictured and knows his whereabouts or has
other information should contact their local police or Crimestoppers
anonymously on 0800 555 111.
