No major news!
If no news is good news, then so far this year has been very good news, with no major incidents to report from our patch! Let me know if you know differently! Also, if you have any good news or events you’d like to see mentioned, let me know.

Watch Awards Money
As discussed in the last newsletter (way back at the end of last year) we will use our prize money of £150 awarded at last year’s Wandsworth Neighbourhood Watch Awards, to purchase a “library” of crime prevention literature and devices for everyone in the Watch to use. The money is now in our watch's bank account so if you have any suggestions for what we should purchase please let me know as soon as possible – so far we’re planning to buy property marking devices and information on home and car security. A small sum has been set aside for drinks and food for Christmas and a street party (if we can arrange one – see below). The remainder of the money will be used for continued production of these newsletters, and our website – which attracts several visitors a day (take a look if you can – the web address is at the top of this page).

Crime Reports
After a period without crime reports at the start of this year, this information is now being provided most weeks and is posted on our website. Let me know if you would like paper copies of the information, or would like it to be Emailed to you.

Street Party?
Would you like to have a street party this year? Would you come along if we held one? Would you be prepared to help on the day? What sort of entertainment should there be? A sense of community spirit is one of the most important things Neighbourhood Watch can achieve – but for that we all need to get out of our houses and meet each other. A great way to do this would be to have another street party like the ones held here in the past. Sadly some of the main party organisers have since moved out of the area, so we now urgently need new volunteers to come forward to help get a street party off the ground – perhaps for the Queen’s Jubilee. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help. You can email me at hillside@andysteele.com.

CRIME REPORTS AND NEWS FROM THE POLICE

Here’s a taster of some of the recent local incidents – full reports are available on the newsflash page.

  • Robbery occurred in a Building Society, Tooting High Street SW17 on Monday 18th February 2002 at 9.50am. Two suspects entered the premises one suspect vaulted the counter, took money from open tills, whilst the second suspect stood guard on the door. Suspects were followed on foot from the venue as far as Fountain Road where they were lost at the rear of St. George’s Hospital.
Suspect 1: is a black male aged 20 years, 5 feet 6 inches tall, athletic build with short hair wearing dark clothing, grey/cream woollen hat and white trainers.
Suspect 2: is a black male aged about 23 years, 5 feet 7 inches tall wearing a grey or light blue top with white/black trainers.

  • A Securicor Guard was robbed whilst making a delivery to a clothes store in tooting high street on Monday 18th February 2002 at 5.20pm. He was grabbed from behind and his cash box stolen. There are 3 suspects:
Suspect 1: is a white male, 5 feet 9 inches tall aged about 22 years, stocky build wearing a black top and hat.
Suspect 2: is a white male 5 feet tall wearing a black top, possibly hooded.
Suspect 3: is a black male aged about 22 years wearing a royal blue hooded Nike top, gold loop in ear.
Suspects were seen to make off in Totterdown Street. As a result of information from a member of the public, and some good old- fashioned detective work, two people have been arrested in connection with this incident. One of whom has been charged with robbery and the other remains on police bail.

  • The theft of mobile telephones continues to be a serious problem. Please take all sensible precautions to safeguard yours, including marking handsets and batteries with your postcode followed by your house or flat number and recording the unique serial number (IMEI number) of your phone. You can find this by keying in *#06# and the number will appear on your phone screen. Watch where you use your phone and please report all cases of theft.

If you have any information about the above incidents, please call Sergeant Julian Hagley on 020 8247 8383.
